IIT-JEE backtracks on key release

New Delhi: IIT-JEE has backed out from their announcement that the answer keys would be publicly announced within 48-72 hours. Now, the solution would be posted on the website of JEE by May 15 -- 35 days after the examination.

Around 4.85 students will appear for JEE, which will be held on April I0. Going back on its promise would mean students have to rely on coaching institutes for answer keys. Usually, answer keys are given by coaching institutes on the same day. JEE started releasing the answer keys on August 1 since 2008 only when the whole admission process was complete. Releasing it on May 15 would be of little relief since by then Optical Response Sheets (ORS) of candidates would have been corrected.

Two weeks ago, IIT-Kanpur, which is conducting JEE this year, had announced three important reforms: answer keys would be made public within 48-72 hour, marks of candidates whether qualified or not would be declared along with the result and ORS of candidates would be scanned and posted on the website. Questions are also being raised about putting scanned copy of ORS along with the declaration of result.

There is a possibility of even this reform could be rolled back. A statement issued by IIT-Kanpur says ORS would be displayed "after 25 May, i.e.; after the result declaration". The statement did not commit a timeframe. If this is not done before 30 May, 2011, i.e. before filling the choices it wouldn't serve any purpose. Many experts have pointed out that simply putting the scanned copy would not help in detecting tampering because the candidate does not have a carbon copy of ORS.
