JEE (Main) dates announced

Joint Entrance Examination (Main) sets to get bigger. With Gujarat, Maharashtra and Odisha also joining the entrance exam for engineering colleges, the number of candidates is likely to cross the 14 lakh mark, highest so far which was recorded last year. The CBSE has announced the dates for the entrance exam for admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), other centrally funded technical institutions (CFTIs), institutions under several participating State Governments and several other institutions. This exam is also the preliminary one from which the top 1.5 lakh candidates stand a chance to appear for the JEE (advanced), the entrance for the IITs.

The application process for the JEE (main) 2014 starts from November 15, 2013 and candidates can apply only through online via the official website. Application process will come to an end on December 26, 2013 and the exams will start on April 6, 2014. The exam will be conducted via offline (pen-paper based) as well as online for the engineering entrance which is paper 1, while the paper 2 which is for architecture will be conducted only on offline mode.

The states of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Odisha have also joined the JEE (main) system. Therefore, the candidates seeking admission to the institutions in these states, which were earlier admitting based on their State Level Examination, also need to fill in the JEE (main) 2014 application form online.

Last year 14 lakh candidates registered for the JEE (main). The test is crucial as it will determine which 1.5 lakh candidates of the 14 lakh registered aspirants will be eligible for the JEE (advance), the entrance test for the Indian Institutes of Technology, IIT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad. It will also decide the final merit list of JEE (main) for admissions BE/ BTech programmes of various National Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Information Technology, Delhi Technological University and other centrally funded institutes of technology, as well as engineering colleges for the participating states.

There will be two merit lists of which one will be for 1.5 lakh aspirants who will take the JEE (advance) paper 1 and 2. There will be an overall merit list based on 60% weightage to JEE (main) score and 40% weightage of normalized class XII Board marks based on which students will be called for counseling and admission to various NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs.
