JNTU bars 2K students from exams

HYDERABAD: The Jawaharlal Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad, has barred nearly 2,000 second, third and final Year students from appearing for their B.Tech examinations which began on April 11 for not having sufficient attendance.

As per JNTU norms, students must have 75 per cent attendance to be eligible to sit for exams. Though a 10 per cent concession is given on medical grounds, students whose attendance falls below 65 per cent are not allowed to sit for the exams. Last year, however, JNTU-Hyderabad had been forced to give an additional five per cent attendance concession owing to the Telangana agitation which had disrupted academic activities for months due to frequent bandhs and closures.

Sources said that JNTU officials this year are under immense political pressure to allow barred students to appear for the exams. Several ministers, MPs, MLAs and other public representatives are making repeated calls to vice-chancellor, Prof. D.N. Reddy, and other exam branch officials and are even sending recommendation letters asking them to allow the students to take the exams. Many are pointing to the 5 per cent relaxation given last year and are asking that the same be extended this year.

“We can't permit students who have less than 65 per cent attendance to sit for the semester examinations. The University is implementing the government's orders on minimum attendance and any decision to relax the rule has to be taken by the government,“ said Dr M.Chandra Shekar, rector, JNTU-Hyderabad, who is also the in-charge for university exams. He added that the number of such students was “negligible“ given that a total of two lakh students were appearing for the exams.
