Lecturers against overhaul of Inter syllabus

A section of junior college lecturers from the city have decided to oppose the state government decision to adopt NCERT syllabus in intermediate first and second years. The lecturers at a meeting held in the city on Wednesday stated that the government should continue with the present intermediate curriculum as in several subjects the state syllabus is more advanced than the one prescribed by NCERT.

The state government has decided to adopt NCERT syllabus at the intermediate level as many national level competitive examinations including the newly-introduced National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions follow this syllabus.

According to lecturers, in subjects like mathematics and physics, the state syllabus is more advanced than the NCERT syllabus. “The state should not blindly adopt NCERT syllabus. The class X state syllabus for Math is more advanced than the class XI and XII syllabus of NCERT,” said Madhusudan Reddy, general secretary, AP Junior College Lecturers Association.

The lecturers said that the state should adopt only portions that are not covered in state syllabus from NCERT textbooks. “In the state we have separate zoology and botany sections in intermediate but in NCERT there is only one section called biology. So, if there are shortcomings in our syllabus we should adopt the portions that are not covered,” said Reddy. The meeting was attended by senior faculty members of several junior colleges in the state.

“While developing the content for the new intermediate textbooks the state should involve intermediate lectures. This will help us to develop a competent syllabus for the new academic year,” lecturers said.

The lecturers’ association will petition the higher ups of secondary education department on Thursday stating their demands.
