Manipal University's doctorate for Satya Nadella

Manipal University has decided to confer an honorary doctorate on its celebrity student Satya Nadella, who now helms Microsoft as its CEO, at a special convocation here.

In the space of 2-3 months this year, two of the university's alumni have been chosen to head tech bellwethers - besides Satya Nadella, his junior Rajeev Suri will take over as boss of Finnish telecom major Nokia on the morrow.

Satya is a 1988-batch Electronics and Communication student of Manipal Institute of Technology, part of Manipal University.

University vice-chancellor Ramdas M Pai told TOI that he has mailed Satya the varsity's intent to award the doctorate. The varsity would wait for Satya to mark time for the special convocation where it would felicitate him. The vice-chancellor said it was understandable Satya is hard-pressed for time as he has recently taken over as Microsoft chief and his primary focus is the new job on hand. The university is also open to felicitating Rajeev Suri. Pai said he would take this suggestion to the board.

Among the hundreds of alumni who have made the university proud, Pai mentioned KEF Holdings chairman Faizal Kottikollon, who, through his Faizal and Shabana Foundation, has signed a deal with the university to invest over $800,000 to set up an R&D facility here. The facility will focus on precast concrete technology at MIT and introduce a precast design and engineering course in the university's curriculum.
