MCA, MBA colleges in deep crisis

A number of colleges offering MBA and MCA courses might shut shop with very few students showing interest in doing the courses.

The situation is pitiable in respect of colleges offering the MCA course since most of the IT firms prefer B.Tech students to MCAs.

This year at least 59 MCA colleges and nine MBA colleges have registered nil admissions with not even a single student choosing to study there after the first phase of admissions which concluded recently.

A few college managements have brought the issue to the AP MCA/MBA College Management Association’s notice to take a appropriate measure to to help them survive. “We will request the Andhra Pradesh State Council for Higher Education (APSCHE) to convert their management quota seats into convener quota. The college authorities will make the request as there are no takers for management quota seats in respect of colleges that are located in various parts of the state,’’ said a director of a private college near Kukatpally.

With students and parents sceptical about the prospects of jobs in the information technology sector, admissions to MCA courses were poor. As a result, only 30 per cent seats were filled in the first phase of counselling in a clear indication that a number of colleges that offer MBA and MCA courses might shut shop.

Out of the 937 MBA colleges, total seats were filled only in 402 colleges while among the 634 MCA colleges only 129 could attract full admissions. The allotment indicates poor response from the ICET qualified candidates as 44,879 seats remained vacant out of the 94,041 seats available under the convener quota. Out of the 1,26,619 qualified candidates, only 51,193 appeared for certificate verification and of them only 50,723 exercised their options. In the MBA stream, 23,141 seats remained vacant while 21,738 remained vacant in the MCA stream.

In previous year too there was not much demand for the admissions to MBA and MCA colleges. Only 4,500 students turned up for over 30,000 seats. Most of the students had again opted for MBA colleges. At the end of the second phase of counselling just 13,000 seats out of 34,000 seats in MCA colleges were filled.
