Medical colleges stick to fees demand

Hyderabad: With counselling set for Friday, private medical colleges are sticking to their demand for bank guarantees for four years fees at the time of admission to Category B seats. The four years’ fee works out to Rs 36 lakh in TS. In AP, the demand is for Rs 11 lakh, the equivalent of a full year’s fee. Private medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana State held their own entrance tests for admissions to the 35 per cent Category B seats. Paying the amount up front is proving difficult for parents, who have asked for concessions. Banks are also unwilling to issue bank guarantees against rural properties and are accepting only urban properties. “We have asked the private medical colleges to reduce the bank guarantee amount from four years’ fees to one year fee, like in Andhra Pradesh. In return, the colleges are asking for the fee to be increased to the level in AP which is Rs 11 lakh, from Rs 9 lakh in the state,” said a senior official from the Telangana State Council of Higher Education. “We had discussions and the minutes have been sent to the health ministry. So far we have not received any intimation for further discussions,” said Mr C. Lakshmi Narsimha Rao, president, Telangana Private Medical and Dental Colleges’ Association.
