National Institute of Design, 3KVs allotted to Seemandhra

The division of Andhra Pradesh had its first fall-out on 28th February, when Seemandhra Union ministers prevailed upon the Centre to shift the National Institute of Design (NID) from Hyderabad to Vijayawada. The alert ministers also managed to get three Kendriya Vidyalaya schools to be sanctioned for Kadapa, Guntur and East Godavari districts at a cost of Rs 15 crore each.

The development took place at the Union cabinet meeting that was held at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's residence on 28th February. Wounded in the battle they waged to preserve the status quo of Andhra Pradesh, the Seemandhra ministers protested the Centre's decision to set up NID in Hyderabad apart from three more such institutes in Jorhat (Assam), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) and Kurukshetra (Haryana).

The Centre will spend about Rs.434 crore on setting up the four NIDs and make them as centres of excellence. The proposed design institutes will offer both under-graduate and post graduate education in design disciplines meeting the regional needs.
