NCERT seeks Institute of National Importance status from govt

In order to start new courses and award degree to candidates, recently National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has asked the Union Human Resource Development Ministry to give them 'Institute of National Importance' status.
Education NewsFurther, during the 56th Foundation Day of the institute, NCERT Director Hrushikesh Senapaty said that "its regional institute were affiliated to different state universities which created difficulties."

Details of the proposal:
As per reports, a committee headed by Govardhan Mehta had earlier suggested 'Institute of National Importance status' for the NCERT.
Moreover, after approval of the Executive Council, a proposal was submitted to the HRD ministry a few months back.
Also, NCERT Director said that one of the regional institutes under the NCERT could not have the semester system because it was not following the norms of the university it was affiliated to.
During the ongoing programme, Minister of State for HRD Upendra Kushwaha also promised that the HRD ministry would look into the issue soon and will provide degree granting powers and try to resolve the problems.
Not only this, NCERT director also asked for one Regional Institute of Education in every state.

Meanwhile, by Acts of Parliament, top institutes like IITs and IISc etc have been granted 'Institute of National Importance' status so that they could confer degrees to students.

"All our institutes are affiliated to state universities and have to run programmes only as per their guidelines. Therefore, often we are not in a position to run innovative programmes," Senapaty added.
