New cut-off for Inter students

HYDERABAD : About 13,000 students in the state will benefit from the new relaxed eligibility criteria for admission to engineering courses this year.
The All India Council of Technical Educaion (AICTE) had in January this year fixed a cut-off of 50 per cent in Class XII for students from the open category and 45 per cent for reserved quota students to be eligible for admission to engineering courses.

But it has recently reduced the cut-off marks to 45 per cent for OCs and 40 per cent for reserved quota students.

Nearly 13,000 students who had qualified in the Eamcet engineering exam this year had got less than the 50 and 45 per cent cutoff and would not have been eligible to apply for admission to engineering courses.

But with the relaxed criteria, they can now do so. It still remains for the state government to issue orders to implement the AICTE's latest directive. The government is expecting further lowering of the cut-off marks with some states pressurising the AICTE to lower the threshold even further keeping in mind reserved quota students.

Until the government issues the order, Eamcet counselling cannot begin.

As many as 2,07,252 students qualified in the Eamcet engineering exam this year.

Of them, 1.94 lakh students had secured cut-off marks of 50 per cent and 45 per cent in the 10+2 exams, leaving 13,000 students ineligible for engineering admissions despite getting ranks in Eamcet.
