New VC takes charge of troubled OU

HYDERABAD : The new vice chancellor of Osmania University, Prof. Satyanarayana, took charge on Monday amid a plethora of problems.
Immediate challenges for the vice-chancellor include the simmering tension on the campus on account of the T-agitation, as well as a severe shortage of funds, among others.

The decision of the former VC, Prof. Tirupathi Rao, to give Ph.D admissions to 1,700 students this year has caused a shortage of accommodation on the campus.

The university needs to build at least five new hostels to accommodate the research scholars.

The new VC admitted that the university has been passing through difficult times and sought the cooperation of students and staff to tide over the turbulence.

“Students will always be high on my agenda. I don't say they should not participate in agitations. But they should also think about their future,“ Prof Satyanarayana remarked.

“The university has been facing a severe fund crunch.While the government is allotting grants of about `100 crore per annum, the university has been incurring an expenditure of nearly `170 crore. We have to bridge this gap. We plan to expand distance education programmes and set up study centres abroad. We plan to enter into MoUs with foreign universities for the purpose,“ he added.
