Last year, the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT M) continued its dominance as the country's best higher education institution, securing the top spot for the fifth consecutive year. IIT Madras also bagged the first position in engineering for the eighth year in a row and was assessed as the second-best research institution in the country. IIT Madras missed the top spot in the research category by merely 2.2 marks, which was claimed by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru.

In the overall category, ranks third to tenth in the ‘overall’ category of 2023 were secured by IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, AIIMS Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

Just like the engineering category, the medical category also saw repeated winner. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi once again earned the top rank in the list of medical colleges last year. AIIMS Delhi was followed by Chandigarh’s Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Christian Medical College and Bangalore’s National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), who also retained their second, third and fourth spot, respectively.

NIRF 2023 rankings were released by the Minister of State for Education, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh. The 2023 rankings assessed 5,543 higher education institutions across 13 categories – ‘overall’, universities, medical, engineering, management, law, architecture, colleges, research institutions, pharmacy, dental, agriculture and allied sectors, and innovation. The agriculture category was introduced last year. As of now, no new category has been announced this year.
