No clarity on JEE pattern in 2014

Students aiming for admission to IITs and NITs are confused over preparing for the JEE, which is expected to be held in April/May 2014.The IIT Council, the governing body for all the IITs, is yet to give any clarity over whether the controversial "top-20 percentile norm" to be eligible for admission to IITs will be continued or not after qualifying in JEE (Advanced). It’s a similar case with NITs, which faced the ire of the students on account of 'normalisation of Class XII Board exam marks’ to decide final ranks in JEE (Main).

These two new norms that came into force from 2013 evoked sharp protests from students and parents across the country. Several cases were filed in High Courts of various states against these norms. The Joint Admission Board of IITs, had met on August 25 to discuss the issue. Though there were reports that the JAB had decided to continue with the new JEE pattern adopted in 2013, there was no official announcement to this effect. The JAB’s decision has to be ratified by the IIT Council, if the same pattern is to be continued. However, there has been no decision by the Council so far on this issue.

Meanwhile, the next meeting of JAB is expected to be held on September 15 at Kharagpur. It is expected to again discuss, at length, whether to continue with the top-20 percentile norm. There are suggestions to do away with the top-20 percentile norm and instead fix a uniform cut-off for all the Boards to be eligible for IIT admissions. Similarly, there are suggestions to increase the number of ‘filtered’ students from 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh in JEE (Main) to be eligible to appear for JEE (Advanced) for admission to IITs.
