No MBBS admission after July 15

The Supreme Court has ruled that the government, and the medical and dental councils “should not issue any recognition or approval after July 15” for the admissions for MBBS and BDS courses during the respective academic year.

Framing guidelines for admissions to these courses, the apex court said, “The commencement of new courses or increase in seats of existing courses of MBBS/BDS are to be approved/recognised by
the Central government by July 15 of each calendar year for relevant academic sessions of that year.“

“If any such approval is granted after July 15, it shall only be operative for the next academic year and not in the current academic year,” the bench of Justices A.K. Patnaik and Swatanter Kumar said.

Violation of the orders would invite both contempt proceedings and initiation of departmental action against those violating the court’s directions.

The order will enable the AP government to complete Eamcet medical counselling at the earliest and begin classes by Julyend.

The medical counselling being conducted by the NTR University of Health Sciences every year usually drags on till September
due to the addition of MBBS and BDS seats in phases by MCI.

Despite the announcement of Eamcet results in June, the NTRUHS is not in a position to start counselling till July-end with no clarity on the number of seats to be approved by MCI in MBBS and BDS courses.

The addition of seats in the midst of the counselling was also posing various problems to the officials as the entire seat matrix and reservations changed accordingly. With this, the officials were being forced to conduct counselling in two to three phases to fill the seats.`
MCI under pressure The managements of private medical colleges are exerting pressure on MCI to secure additional seats in the absence of the mandatory cut-off date. The latest SC orders will be a short in the arm for MCI to close fresh approvals by July 15 every year
