No New IITs now says Union HRD minister Pallam Raju

The UPA government on Wednesday made it clear that it does not intend to open new central universities or IITs in the foreseeable future but instead will focus on consolidating the existing ones.

Answering a volley of questions during question hour on why Indian universities did not figure in the list of top 100 institutes in the world, Union HRD minister Pallam Raju said, “Right now, our effort should be on consolidating what we have created.“

On the ranking system adopted to grade institutes of higher learning, the minister said, “These international ranking systems use different values, indices and parameters to rank higher educational institutions. These criteria are neither internationally accepted nor recognised and are there fore sometimes subjected to criticism in academic circles.” He added, “Though some institutions in the country like IITs and IIMs are comparable in quality and standards to any highly ranked university in the world, they are not able to figure in the top list due to their focus on limited programmes and disciplines.” Mr Raju also promised to improve the quality of research in the newly established IITs.
