No takers for nine engineering colleges in AP

A total of nine colleges have registered zero engineering admissions in Andhra Pradesh. Only a single college in Telangana did not make any admission. According to Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) chairman Prof. L Venugopal Reddy, 103 colleges in both the states have secured 100 per cent admissions. "Of 103, 60 in Telangana, 38 in AP and five State wide colleges have registered 100 per cent admission rate," Reddy informed No student opted for 32 colleges in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh and 55 colleges registered only five per cent admissions in 2013-2014 academic year.

"This year, a total of 149 in Telangana and 326 colleges in AP witnessed above 901 admissions. Colleges in and around Hyderabad have seen maximum admissions," Reddy said. Around 47 colleges in AP could fill only 16 to 20 seats; and in Telangana only three colleges could make 20 admissions. "About 33 colleges in Telangana and 180 in AP registered 150 admissions. The admissions were completed as per Supreme Court?s ruling. A few students reported to their allotted colleges in both the states.' Reddy said. After government's decision to do away with 174 colleges from the web counseling, many colleges failed to register minimum admissions. As many as 33 colleges in Telangana could fill seat between 101 and 150 though 120 seats were allotted for each stream.

According to a senior official of APSCHE, the Telangana government took the right move to cut down engineering colleges. "Had all the 174 colleges participated in web counseling, the number of colleges registering zero admissions would have been 60," the official said. ?Now the AP government has realized and is contemplating to do away with colleges which violate All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) norms. In the next academic year the number of colleges may come down," an official of APSCHE said.

Meanwhile, Telangana private engineering college managements have said that those which could just make 5-10 admissions last year were renewed affiliation. "About 50 good colleges with all the facilities and which registered above 300 admissions did not figure in the web counseling list," said a member of Telangana private engineering college managements association. A decision on the second phase engineering counseling would be taken in the next week.
