NTR university to set up centre in city

HYDERABAD : In a major decision that will benefit the medicos of the Telangana region, Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, and the Cabinet on Thursday approved setting up of the office of regional coordinator of NTR University of Health Sciences in the city.

“A full fledged centre with more than 150 employees and a regional coordinator will soon operate from the university's local office in Koti,“ the information minister, Ms D.K. Aruna, said.

The medical students found it tedious to communicate with the university authorities located in Vijayawada for issues relating to academics and examinations. “The centre will help avoid the shuttling between the two cities,“ the health secretary, Mr P.V.Ramesh pointed out.

The officials also propose that the regional centre would act as the apex body for all the para medical and nursing institutions besides organising the much needed Continuing Medical Education programme for the faculty members of Telangana region.

The Cabinet also approved setting up of a health park in the Chief Minister's native Chittoor district. The Apollo group of hospitals proposed the state-of-the-art medical facility on 86 acres. The government has allotted land at `3.5 lakh per acre.

The Cabinet sanctioned 151 posts in the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) engineering college in Manthani of Karimnagar district.

The Chief Minister said that the government would take up a mass literacy drive and improve education sector with `2,500 crore in the next two years. He added that the state is faring poor in achieving literacy levels and urged the ministers to focus on the education sector in their respective districts.
