Over 7,000 apply for B.Ed programme

Chennai: More teacher aspirants have applied for counselling for B.Ed programme in government and its aided colleges this year. According to data provided by Lady Willingdon Institute of Advanced Study in Education (LWIASE), Chennai, which conducts counselling for government and its aided institutions, about 8,000 students bought application forms. Over 7,000 of them submitted the form to attend counselling this year. There are 1,777 seats in seven government and 14 aided education colleges in the state this year. Principal of LWIASE R.Bharathy said the institute would release the rank list by September 18. The first phase of counselling will start on September 28 and go on till October 5 at the institute in Chennai. Sami. Sathyamurthy, state general secretary of Tamil Nadu High and Higher Secondary School Headmasters’ Association, said as government charges less fees than private colleges, more students aspire to get a seat in a government college. Government charges about Rs 2,000 per year as fees for B.Ed programme and SC/ST students even get scholar-ship. “Today, after the VI Pay Commission, teachers get higher salary. As teachers enjoy good reputation in society, several people want to become teachers,”. Even though students need to study one more year in B.Ed from this year, as the duration of B.Ed programme has been increased from one year to two years, more students have applied for the course.
