Panel Inspects Sites in Vizag, Vizianagaram for Tribal Varsity

A team from the Central government on Tuesday examined two sites in Vizianagaram district and one site in Visakhapatnam district to study the feasibility of setting up the Tribal University in Andhra Pradesh, as per the provisions provided in the AP Reorganisation Act.
Municipal administration and urban development minister P Narayana felt that Vizianagaram has better chances of getting the Tribal University at Gunkalam village, as it would have better road, rail and air connectivity which are crucial for any Central institution.

The Central panel comprising Union HRD Ministry joint secretary Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, UGC financial advisor Tripathi, University of Hyderabad vice-chancellor Haribabu, principal secretary for higher education Sumita Dawra and chief engineer Rajesh Mortal inspected the lands proposed for establishment of the varsity.

The Vizianagaram district authorities presented details regarding the 526-acre land at Relli village in Kothavalasa mandal and the 505-acre land at Gunkalam village in Vizianagaram mandal.

Minister Narayana said that as per the AP Reorganisation Act, Andhra Pradesh is entitled to get 11 Central educational institutions, which will be established at various locations across the state.

“The committee has inspected all the sites, which were recommended for their approval in Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts. A report would be submitted to the Central government shortly and we are ready to commence admissions from the next academic year, if the site is approved,” he added.

The Central government team also inspected the premises of JNTU-K University Engineering College, which has been proposed to host the Tribal University campus temporarily.

Earlier, the members along with Visakhapatnam joint collector J Nivas visited the 500-acre site near Anthakapalli in Sabbavaram mandal of Visakhapatnam district.

It is learnt that the panel also inspected the land allotted for establishment of Indian Maritime University in the same area and told the authorities to ensure that the entire 500 acre land is in one piece for establishing the Tribal University.
