Panel to inspect tech colleges

HYDERABAD : The three-member committee that was appointed by the government to assess engineering colleges with regard to the quality of infrastructure and faculty that they offer students has decided to conduct random inspections of colleges across AP.

It has come to the notice of the committee that several managements of colleges had submitted fake details about their faculty and infrastructure during the Eamcet engineering counselling this year in order to attract stup dents to gain admissions s into the said colleges. N The inspection process h will be completed within a t month to ensure that stu T dents aspiring for engineer ( ing seats have a choice to gauge the performance of a r college on different parame f ters and make an informed a decision about which col a lege to apply to. e At present, the only option A that the students have to m assess the quality of a col c lege is the accreditation e given by the National Board n of Accreditation (NBA). l However, there are com P plaints that several undeserving colleges secured the NBA accreditation with the help of corrupt officials in the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

The government had also received several complaints from students and parents about the lack of facilities and qualified faculty in the engineering colleges across AP. Subsequently, the committee comprising of the commissioner of technical education, Mr K. Lakshminarayana, the vice-chancellor of the JNTU, Hyderabad, Prof. D.N. Reddy, and the academic auditor and mentor in the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQUIP), Mr N. Prakasa Rao, will inspect all colleges to ensure they maintain high standards.

As the government is funding nearly 70 per cent of the total students admitted in the engineering colleges under the fee reimbursement scheme by spending `3,000 crore per year, it wants the colleges to follow certain standards.

Moreover, the state feels that the assessment data will be useful in the future to check errant colleges.
