Paper on Ethics Included in Inter I Curriculum

First year Intermediate students of all streams will have to attempt an additional paper on 'Ethics and Human Values' from the current academic year. Like the environmental science paper, which is being conducted at the end of first year, this subject too will be only of qualifying nature and its marks will not be added in the total.

The proposed subject will be divided into three parts - theory, group activities and field trips. The drafting of the text book for the subject is complete and printing by the Telugu Akademi is awaited. The book will primarily focus on apprising the students on the need to protect human values develop concern towards society and effectively deal with topics related to health and cyber ethics. "Given the turbulent times students are going through, the board thought it is pertinent to have such a paper to enable them to understand society beyond their classrooms.

In fact, the idea behind the introduction of the subject is to bridge the gap between school-level moral science and a similar paper on human values in degree," Board of Intermediate (BIE) secretary Rama Sankar Naik said. With both the governments - Telangana and Andhra Pradesh - giving the nod for its inclusion, the BIE will soon communicate with junior colleges about the contents, evaluation pattern and other related information. With regard to teachers for the subject, Naik said the colleges will be advised to use the services of existing teachers to teach different topics. "For instance, a topic on health can be taught by a faculty of the BiPC stream," he added. While the intention behind the introduction of the subject seems to be noble and genuine, it remains to be seen if the paper will be another farce like environmental science.
