Parents join the fight against NEET

The Andhra Pradesh government, which was to file a petition against the National Eligibility-cumEntrance Test (Neet) for MBBS admissions in the AP High Court, was unable to do so because of “procedural delays.” The petition seeking exemption from Neet was to be filed on Monday. But there was a delay in clearing the files authorising the advocate-general to file the petition. It will now be filed on Tuesday, said minister for health and medical education D.L. Ravindra Reddy.

“We have drafted the affidavit to be submitted in the High Court at our department level. It was sent to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) for approval on Monday. We expect to get the necessary clearance by Tuesday morning. The advocate-general will file the petition immediately,” Mr Reddy said. Meanwhile, parents of Intermediate BiPC students are not waiting for the government but are joining hands to fight against Neet.

They are forming groups to bring pressure on the government to seek exemption from the nation-wide test. They are also planning to file a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Andhra Pradesh High Court against the test. The managements of corporate colleges such as Narayana, Sri Chaitanya, Gayatri Academy, Nalanda etc. are supporting the parents and arranging meetings for parents to muster support.

“Some parents have also proposed that we collect donations for mobilising funds to fight cases in courts against the Neet. If the government won’t take up the issue seriously, we are ready to fight a legal battle in the High Court and Supreme Court against Neet,” said Mr S. Suryanarayana, a representative of the parents’ association. The government is trying to seek exemption from Neet as per Article 371(b) of the Constitution. Mr Ravindra Reddy said that this allowed autonomy to J&K and the same is applicable to AP since 1986.

The government is also banking on Bihar government, which has written to the Centre that it will not implement Neet, since education is in concurrent list and so the state has the right to take decision whether to follow Neet or not.Corporate colleges back parents Managements of corpo rate colleges are encou raging parents and arranging meetings for them to muster support The government is try ing to seek exemption as per Article 371(b)
