Professional colleges vie to shut down

HYDERABAD : After being flooded with applications for setting up new professional colleges in the state since 2004, the All India Council for Technical Education is now getting several applications from colleges, all vying for closure.

This year the AICTE has received just five applications from the state for setting up new colleges, but about 100 applications from engineering colleges applying for closure of IT courses and another 150 MCA colleges seeking to close down.

Of the total 60,000 engineering seats available in the IT stream in the state, only 30,000 were filled up last year.

The AICTE had given approval to over 350 engineering colleges in the state during the last three years taking the total number of colleges to 707 with an intake of about 2.85 lakh seats, the highest in the country. The state also has the highest number of MBA and MCA colleges at 971 and 713 respectively with an intake of 78,340 and 50,148 respectively. While 47,000 engineering seats remained vacant in the convenor quota, another 50,000 seats had no takers in the management quota last year.

The worst hit were MCA colleges, as nearly 100 of them had “zero admissions“ and another 200 got “single digit admissions“.

About 62 per cent of the MCA seats went vacant. Of the total 34,451 MCA seats available in the convenor quota, only 13,104 got filled leaving 21,347 seats vacant. Of the total 52,588 MBA seats available, 44,105 got filled, leaving 8,000 seats vacant.
