PSUs to take NET score for recruitments

The National Eligibility Test (NET) being conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC), to award research fellowships and to appoint assistant professors in universities, will now be considered for job recruitment in public sector undertakings (PSUs).

Public sector undertakings have already proposed taking the NET score of candidates into consideration while recruiting. The Indian Oil Corporation has secured permission to consider NET scores for recruitment.

"With the NET score, it will be easy to assess a candidate's knowledge of subjects and his understanding skills. It is for this reason that employers are giving importance to NET score during recruitment. Many PSUs are likely to opt for this in the coming days," said Prof. D.N. Reddy, member, UGC.

The proposal is expected to increase the number of NET candidates in the future. There had been a decline in the last two years. There were 28,824 candidates appearing for NET in December 2012. The number has fallen by around 2,500 candidates this year. The UGC conducts NET in June and December every year. The aim is to ensure minimum standards for entrants in the teaching profession and research. NET is considered to be a tough exam. The pass percentage is less than 10 nationally. Out of nearly 10,000 students who appear for the test In Andhra Pradesh, less than 250 students qualify.
