Rajiv Gandhi University promotes failed IIIT students

HYDERABAD: The administration of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies has bowed to pressure and has promoted IIIT first year engineering students who have failed in one or two subjects.

About half of the 2,000 students in IIITs in Basar, Nuzividu and Idupulapaya had failed the first year exams. The university provided ‘remedial education’ to the failed students and conducted supplementary exams for them.

Despite this, 1,030 students, amounting to seven per cent, had failed in one or two subjects and the university had decided not to promote these students.

The decision triggered sharp protests in the IIIT campuses at Nuzividu and Idupulapaya.

Students, however, demanded that they be promoted to the second year since they had just one or two backlogs. The demand was first refused but later the administration bowed to pressure.

“The RGUKT’s detention policy will greatly benefit students in the long run especially as they come for a poor socio-economic and weak educational background. However, the student who failed even after supplementary exams, are requesting promotion to the second year along with the backlogs,” said Prof P.S.N.Reddy, in-charge registrar, RGUKT.

He said students who could not clear up to two subjects will be promoted to the second year but a final decision on the issue will be taken in a meeting of the governing council to be held on August 8.
