Satavahana University shut down

Satavahana University Vice-Chancellor Prof. K. Veera Reddy declared that the varsity would remain closed indefinitely. He was speaking to media persons here on Thursday. The decision was taken following students' protests since Monday demanding basic amenities in hostels on the university premises. "Facilities cannot be provided overnight and so the hostels will remain closed for some time," he said, adding that building toilets and improving facilities in the mess were time-taking processes. The students' protest is an unfair move, he said.

The V-C suspected that some outsiders were trying to take advantage of the situation and impede the growth of the university by provoking the students. Meanwhile, student leaders submitted a representation to joint collector Sarfaraz Ahmed on the issue.

Nagaraju, district president of SFI, said the joint collector spoke to the registrar of the varsity. Mr Ahmed promised to hold discussion with the faculty and students on September 5.In the morning, a large number of students laid siege to the collectorate opposing the sudden closure of the university. They raised slogans against the management of the university.

The students also wanted Prof. S. Sujatha, principal of University Arts College, to step down from her post. They said that she had used abusive remarks against some students who had not attended classes. The university was established in 2008. At present, there are 600 students pursuing various courses. But construction of hostels has not been completed yet putting the students to an inconvenience.

It is the male students who are suffering the most as one of their hostels has not been constructed so far. The hostel, estimated to cost Rs 6.74 crore, was supposed to be completed by July, 2014.
