School fees go up, up and away

With many private and missionary-run schools charging exorbitant fees to the tune of `20,000 to 28,000 per annum for primary sections and `30,000 to 60,000 for senior sections, the disparity in the fee structure is taking huge proportions. Annual fees for students studying in Class I in private schools range from `1,380 to `23,000 in the city.

Though parents have made several representations to the district education officers in Hyderabad and
Ranga Reddy, schools continue to flout the new rules.

A number of schools across Hyderabad district have refrained from declaring their annual fees for primary and high school sections which has been mandated by the education department.

Missionary schools like St.

Louis, St. Philips, St. Pauls, St Peters, St. Marks and St.

Josephs are the forerunners in the race of extracting the highest possible fees. These schools are charging between `7,000 and `15,000 per annum for a Class I student.Meanwhile, the Ranga Reddy district,
which has some of the biggest international schools, has not adhered to the directive to declare the fee structure. In Hyderabad, schools like St. Ann's, Secunderabad, Geetanjali School, Oakridge International School and HPS Begumpet have not declared their fee structures.Among the schools that have declared their fees, the ones that charge the most are Narayana Concept School, with `23,000 per annum for Class I and `28,000 per annum for Class V, Slate with `22,400 for Class I, Kotwal High School with `20,400, Bhashyam HS Karkhana with `20,000 and Gowtham Model High School with `19,600 for Class I.

The lowest among the lot is Anand UPS which is charging `1,380 per annum for Class I.

“The fee structures of many of the private schools are too high which many parents are unable to afford.

Once the Parents’ Teachers Associations are in place, the disparities will come down. We are still persuading schools to declare their fee structures and form the associations to bring down disparities,” said Hyderabad DEO, Dr E. Balakasaiah.
