SSC Exam Reform Hits a Roadblock, Old pattern continues

The efforts of the school education department to restrain students from rote-learning and to encourage critical thinking by bringing in far-reaching changes in the SSC public examination pattern have hit a roadblock.

Following opposition from apprehensive parents and clueless teachers, the authorities have decided to shelve the proposal of new pattern of examinations proposed to be followed from March 2015 public examinations which include bringing down the number of question papers from eleven to seven. That means the SSC board will follow the old examination pattern for the academic year 2014-15 too.

Instead, it was decided to implement the new system based on the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) pedagogy model first for Class IX and enforced for Class X later, an official of the directorate of school education has said.

"Textbooks have been prepared keeping in mind these changes. It is nearly after 15 years that the syllabus has been changed to facilitate a new pattern of examination. Since the new model is in tune with the Right to Education Act guidelines, it is here to stay," he asserted.

Instead of one single and final examination of the board for each subject at the end of the academic year as at present, the new pattern envisages continuous evaluation throughout the year.
