State takes an U-turn on fee Reimbursement

The state government is considering approaching the Supreme Court against a High Court order on reimbursing medical tuition fees to the tune of `21 crore to students belonging to Backward Classes. After having agreed to bear the fee reimbursement costs, the government might now take a Uturn following a rift between the Backward Classes department and the NTR University of Health Sciences.

The move gained significance in view of the affected students launching an agitation recently. Sources said the Chief Minister’s Office has obtained information from the BC Commissioner on the fee fiasco.The university had extended the reimbursement scheme to “B” category seats for which private college managements charged a higher fee of `2.4 lakh per student though they were filled by the convener. As many as 146 MBBS students and 128 dental students had taken admission in private colleges after the varsity’s decision. They approached the HC after the university withdrew its earlier order and obtained a favourable judgement that the state should pay the fees as had been agreed earlier.
