State takes steps for VC appointments in varsities

The state govern ment has finally initiated the process of appointing new vice-chancellors for Telangana University, Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Kakatiya University and Dr B.R. Ambedkar Open University.

These universities have been functioning without VCs for two months to a year. This is because an ordinance to amend the AP Universities Act which empowers the Governor and Chancellor of Universities to select VCs has been delayed. Also, the University Grants Commission did not send its nominees for the search committees that

would shortlist VC candidates, despite being reminded several times by the department of higher education to do so. It has now finally nominated its members for search committees in four universities.

The UGC has nominated Prof. Ram Rajesh Mishra, VC, Rani Durgawati Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur, for Sri Krishnadevaraya University; Prof Josh P. Verghese, former VC, Law University, Bhopal, for Kakatiya University; Prof Shyam B. Menon, VC, Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar University, New Delhi, for Telangana University; and Prof Shivajirao Kadam, VC, Bharati Vidyapeeth University, Pune, for Dr B.R.Ambedkar Open University.

The search committee for Sri Krishnadevaraya University will meet on March 3 to conduct interviews, while interviews for Kakatiya University will be held on March 5 and for Telangana University on March 17.

The interviews for Mahatma Gandhi University, Nalgonda, have already been conducted and the process of appointing the VCs will be completed by April, said Mr Damodara Rajanarasimha, the minister for higher and technical education. Without VCs and executive councils, which were abolished in April 2010, universities have had to put on hold important decisions pertaining to academic planning and finance.
