State urged to continue IIITs

Great damage has been done by reducing seats and fund allocation, says Chukka Ramaiah
KURNOOL: Chukka Ramaiah, MLC and educationist, urged the government to take all measures for continuation of IIITs at three places in the State.

In a statement along with P.B.V. Subbaiah of Ravindra English Medium School here on Wednesday, Mr. Ramaiah feared that the government was not interested in continuing the institutes set up at Nuzvidu, Basara and Idupulapaya in 2008 for reasons not known.

The technical institutes were set up as part of the Rajiv Mission to increase the work force and remove the imbalance in the availability of experts and workforce. Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy who was the brain behind the concept wanted to reserve the opportunity to the rural students by allotting 85 per cent seats for them. With an intake capacity of 2,000 seats at each place, the IIITs would have a combined strength of 6,000 seats, while the total students pursuing education at a time would be 36,000. He said the government had done a great damage to the concept by halving the seats and curtailing fund allocation.

He said the Nuzvidu centre need to create proper infrastructure and staff, while Indupulapaya centre has set up infrastructure but failed to attract talented staff. The Basara centre is yet to prove its excellence. Mr. Ramaiah said as per the trends, most the students who got seats in the IIITs were girls and students belonging to SC, ST and BCs from rural areas. It could be a programme having potential for social transformation. The Rs. 20,000 spent on each student is a small amount considering the multiple benefits of social transformation in rural areas and creating technical work force for the 21st century. India is lagging behind in achieving a balance between work force and experts, while China has put up a good show in this area.

Mr. Subbaiah urged the government to notify the admissions for the next academic year as the SSC Board was likely to announce the results soon.
