Students come up with solar-powered car

JANGAON (WARANGAL DT.): The students of Christu Jyothi Institute of Technology & Sciences, Jangaon, have come up with yet another innovation – this time with a solar powered car.

A team of final-year students from the Department of Electrical & Electronics – N. Tilak Kumar, P. Uday Kumar, R. Madhuri, P. Thirumal and M. Suresh – under the leadership of Head of the Department S. Chandrasekhar Reddy and aided by other technicians, came up with a car that runs on solar power instead of petrol or diesel. The car was unveiled by Palamur University Vice-Chancellor Prof V. Gopal Reddy here on Friday.

Institute director Reverend Father K. Vijay Kumar Reddy said he was happy to find the students taking interest in innovations utilising the research and development facilities provided on campus.

He said the students earlier came up with a solar tri-cycle, bicycle and E-podium. He lauded the students for their efforts. Detailing the technicalities involved in the car project, Mr. Vijay Kumar Reddy said the project mainly consisted of three main parts. First were solar photo voltaic cells that received solar energy and converted it to electrical energy. The energy is stored in battery cells with controlling regulator circuit.

The second part was batteries that stored the electrical energy and supplied it to a DC motor. The third was a DC motor which converts the electrical energy into mechanical energy.

Practical test

“The solar car was tested practically under keen observation and proved that when the batteries were fully charged, it could run continuously for three hours at 35 to 40 kmph,” he explained.

For common people, solar car was very useful. The government can offer any subsidy for solar panels than the cost of solar car will reduce. It does not involve any running and operational cost.

A unit might cost Rs. One lakh and is pollution free and environment friendly.
