Students of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh dominate IIT exam

Domination of students from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana state in the Indian Institutes Technology is well known. But this position has been further cemented this year with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana having the highest number of students who qualified in the IIT JEE (Advanced). At least 20 per cent of all students getting admissions to various IITs in the country were also from the two states. Hyderabad had the second highest number of students who qualified in the IIT JEE (Advanced), thereby becoming eligible for counseling.

A recent report by IIT Kharagpur found that the majority of students who qualified in the exam and obtained seats studied in Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools. Andhra Pradesh Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) came in next, becoming the board sending the second highest number of students to IITs.

Out of the 1.26 lakh students who passed the IIT JEE (Mains), 18,946 students were from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana State. Of them, nearly 4,975 students qualified in the advanced exam earning eligibility to participate in the counseling procedure. Next in the list is Rajasthan, which is another IIT JEE coaching hub, sending about 4,292 students for counseling.

Almost half of the aspirants from AP and TS, who qualified in the IIT JEE (Advanced), were from Hyderabad. There are about 9,784 seats across 16 IITs and other allied institutions. More than half the students, about 5,402, who earned seats in IITs, belonged to the CBSE. Second in line were students from the Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) catering to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana state.
