Tech firms find students from JKC unemployable

HYDERABAD : Of the 1 lakh candidates trained at Jawahar Knowl- edge Centres only 20,000 candidates have been recruit- ed directly and 20,000 to 25,000 indirectly. Even when the IT industry in the state marks impressive growth, their need to find employable graduates from among half a million graduates produced each year, is proving an onerous task. Most of the graduates trained in the state government sponsored Jawahar Knowledge Centres do not satisfy the requirements of IT companies.

The JKCs were introduced in the year 2004 by the Information Technology and Communication Department to develop quality human resources in the IT and ITES sector by bringing about synergy among the institutions of government, industry and academia. This initiative, along with Specialised Training pro grammes for underprivileged groups, was introduced by the state government after complaints by the IT majors in the state.

Students trained in JKCs have registered only 40-45 per cent recruitment. Of the 1 lakh candidates only 20,000 candidates have been recruited directly and 20,000 to 25,000 indirectly till now.

Due to poor grasp of industry grade skills, only 10% of general graduates and 25% engineering graduates are believed to be employable. And even among them students from urban areas benefit more.
