Tech institutes must have dual accreditation

Technical institutes offering courses in Engineering, Pharmacy, Hotel Management, etc will now have to go for dual accreditation. According to new regulations formulated by the UGC, these institutes will have to get an approval from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and the programmes offered by them have to be assessed by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).

According to these regulations, which will be officially notified soon, the process of approval of new institutes, earlier done by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), has been merged with that of the affiliation process, which will be done by universities. They will not only process new applications, but also the clear extension of the existing ones.

"The state can now control the mushrooming of colleges and the surplus seats in these institutes which go vacant every year," said an official. The directorate of technical education has called the directors of board of college and university development (BCUD) from all universities in the state to discuss the matter on April 3.

Senior officials, however, are sceptical about the level of transparency once the new policy comes into implementation. "The AICTE's approval process was online and therefore was transparent; it will be difficult to monitor applications with individual universities having their own independent processes," said an official.
