Telangana Govt. Mulls Scrapping of TET

After HRD minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao announcing that his government will scrap the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), the Telangana government is also contemplating doing away with the preliminary test held prior to the District Selection Committee exam, sources in the school department have said. According to a senior official in the department, the government is thinking on the lines of replacing the old system that existed prior to 2011, when DSC alone was conducted for carrying out teacher recruitments in the state. Until the last exam conducted on March 16 this year, the AP TET was held thrice annually, expect in 2013. The TET is held as a preliminary exam to shortlist candidates for DSC. As part of this change, the official informed that the subjects that are part of the TET exam will to add to the DSC exam. Further he said, "since, we have the Union government's directive that we need to carry out a preliminary exam before DSC, we should also need to sort out legal issues." Meanwhile, it is learnt that the district education officers in the state have been instructed to report about the number of teacher vacancies in their respective districts, which will be consolidated later at the state-level. "The government is planning to issue a fresh DSC notification around October to carryout recruitment drive for the next academic year," he added. Ever since, the political unrest had hit the undivided state of AP, the teacher recruitment process had failed to take off leaving aspirants both in Telangana and AP in a limbo. Thus the DSC notification issued in July last year for recruitment of 20,508 posts in the then undivided state could not be held owing to political unrest and election code.
