Telangana University yet to get UGC nod

Fails To Fulfil Norms Set By The Commission
Nizamabad: Even five years after it came into existence, the University Grants Commission (UGC) recognition remains a distant dream for Telangana University (TU), which was established here amidst much fanfare in 2006 by the then YSR government.

Sources said the university had failed to fulfil the norms prescribed by the UGC because of which recognition wasn’t granted to it. University sources said though all the newly-formed universities get 2(F) certificate by the UGC apex body, it was essential to obtain 12(B) certificate to get UGC recognition and special grants.

“There are certain guidelines to be fulfilled for 12(B) certification. Apart from meeting faculty standards, improvement in infrastructure facilities is also key to getting UGC recognition,” a retired professor said. Due to severe financial crunch, the university continues to lack infrastructure though it shifted to a new campus in Dichpalli 3 years ago.

As per UGC norms, there should be a professor, two associate professors and three assistant professors in each department besides well-established classrooms, hostels, laboratories, library and other infrastructure facilities. “However, no varsity in the state established along with TU have adequate facilities,” a professor rued.

Of the 18 courses being offered by TU, no department has enough teaching faculty. “Seven departments were shifted to Bikhnoor PG centre due to lack of facilities on the main campus at Dichpalli,” an associate professor told TOI.

While commerce, English, mass communication and pharmacy departments have professors, associate and assistant professor posts are vacant. “The remaining 14 departments do not have professors also,” a faculty member said.

While laying the foundation stone for the new campus at Dichpalli in May 2007, late CM Y S R had promised to sanction Rs 20 crore every year up to five years for development of the university but not a single rupee has been released so far. Sources said CM N Kiran Kumar Reddy had assured to release Rs 10 crore during his tour last month but no money was released till now.
