Universities Should Give Info on Admission of Students and Funding, Orders UGC

Coimbatore: The University Grants Commission has now come up with a new regulation called the UGC (Furnishing of Information by Universities) Regulation 2015 that makes it mandatory for universities to give information on student admission and funding status. The UGC at its recent meeting discussed the new regulation and approved it.
?The participation of universities in the All India Survey on Higher Education is not up to expectation. If a university fails or delays in providing information, it will affect the policy making process of the UGC. Under the new rule, providing information like student admission, funding status and its use have become mandatory for universities,? said UGC vice-chairman H Devaraj.

?Till now, it was only a guideline. Now it has become mandatory for universities to provide the required information. With the enforcement of the new regulation, if universities failed to provide the information, the UGC funding of those universities will be stopped,? he added.

Apart from this, the UGC has also come up with another guideline called UGC (Gender Sensitization, Prevention and Prohibition of Sexual Harassment of Women Employees and Students and Redressal of Grievances in Higher Education Institutions) Regulation, 2015.

The provisions of the new regulation are based on the SAKSHAM report, Devaraj said. SAKSHAM report deals with measures for ensuring safety and security of women on campuses and programmes for gender sensitization.

The UGC has also formed a committee headed by Devaraj to sensitize universities across the country about the Choice Based Credit System.

?We would be travelling across the country in the next one month, explaining the CBCS system to universities,? the UGC vice- chairman added.
