US varsity invites students

HYDERABAD: President of the Pittsburg State University (PSU) Steven Alan Scott, on his visit to the city on Monday, sought to assure the Indian students aiming for higher education in the USA that the university does not yearn for profits, and functions with the goal to serve.

On a visit to the university's Liaison Centre here on the heels of the Tri-Valley University fiasco, Dr.Scott spoke at a press conference, and informed that the university does not follow the “bottom-line” approach of business, as it is not concerned about profits and gets funded by the Kansas State. Among the 500 international students of the university, 80 are from India, he said.

Informing about the presence of 80 Indians among the 500 international students studying in the university, he drew attention to the University Liaison Centre in the city which offers various services including visa processing free of cost.

Acting as a communication channel between the university and the students here, the centre located at 402, Usha Kiran Arcade, Vidya Nagar, on the Osmania University Road, provides information about the university, helps in processing applications, offers guidance on courses, and updates on the application status. The centre also offers visa guidance and pre-departure guidance services free of cost.

Student-aspirants can choose from 100 academic programmes distributed among the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, and Technology. The university specialises in Technology and Business Management courses, with more stress on undergraduate programmes, Dr.Scott informed.

Promoting the university, he said the Kansas State, where it is located, is relatively immune from economic upheaval, and the university had not lain off faculty despite reduction in state funding by a billion dollars. In contrast, many universities in other States had reduced the size of faculty due to massive cuts in funding.

Talking about financial aid and scholarships to the students, the Associate Director, Office of International Programmes and Services of the University Cathy Lee Arcuino said scholarships are available at the time of admission based on merit. Furthermore, depending on the performance during the first semester, the students can avail graduate assistantships and on-the-campus jobs of 20 hours per week.

More importantly, four-year graduation is not mandatory for admission into Masters Programmes in the university.

Students applying for Masters in management are permitted to attempt GMAT after taking admission.

For details on admission requirements, one may log on to www.pittstate.edu/international, or approach the Liaison Centre coordinator at 9000066988.
