With 315 million students, India ranks highest in the world

India tops the world in terms of student numbers with a staggering 315 million student population, according to the Census 2011 data released recently. Indian students could comprise the fourth largest nation across the world, the United States (US), which has a population of 318 million. As per the statistics provided by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the student population of China is around 252 million.

The Census data has some out-of-the-ordinary facts. Of the total student base of 315 million, the age of more than 3.3 million students is over 30 years. Moreover, the age of over 12 lakh students is more than 60 years, while that of 1.2 lakh students is over 80 years. However, such data is applicable to a mere over 1% of the overall number of candidates.

The number of students in the age group of 0 to 4 years is a whopping 10.5 million. There has been an increase in the number of students in that age group joining play-schools. The overall population of people in the 0 to 4 age group in the country is 112 million. This implies that around 10% of them are either in pre-nursery schools or creches.

Around 9.5 million students are marginal workers, that is, they are employed on an irregular assignment or part time, for not over six months in a single year.

Around 60% of the working students are men while the rest are women, which throws light on the steep cost of education in the country, according to the census data.

The government of India has been taking steps to make quality education accessible to all strata of the society. In fact, the enhancement of the educational system of the country is one of the main agenda points of the new government.
