The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), which is administered by the Consortium of National Law Universities, a group of representative universities, is a national level entrance exam for admission to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) legal programs provided by 22 National Law Universities in India.

Several affiliate universities and organisations also use the CLAT exam for admissions and recruitment respectively. All admissions to the 5-year integrated LL.B. and LL.M. programmes that commence in the Academic Year 2024-2025 shall be through the CLAT 2024.

CLAT 2024 Key Features:

Every year, thousands of students take the CLAT, a national legal admission exam. In India right now, it's one of the most competitive legal entrance tests.

  • The number of questions for the undergraduate CLAT 2024 has been reduced from 150 to 120.
  • The duration of the exam remains the same at 2 hours.
  • The exam will be divided into five sections: English Language, Current Affairs Including General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Techniques.
  • The exam will be conducted in more than 83 test cities throughout India for a two-hour time period in offline mode.
  • The questions will be asked in English language only.
  • For each incorrect response, 0.25 marks will be deducted.
  • In the paper, there will be both subjective and multiple-choice questions (MCQs).

CLAT 2024 Eligibility Criteria:

Nationality: To apply for the exam, candidates must be Indian citizens, residents of the United States, or be sponsored by an NRI.

For UG Courses-

  • There is be no upper age limit for candidates appearing for UG Programme through the CLAT 2024.
  • Candidates must secure the following minimum percentage of marks in their qualifying examination (i.e., 10+2 or an equivalent examination)
  • Forty five percent (45%) marks or its equivalent grade in case of candidates belonging to General / OBC / PWD / NRI / PIO / OCI categories.
  • Forty Percent (40%) marks or equivalent in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST categories.
  • Candidates who may be appearing for their qualifying examination in March/ April, 2024 are also eligible to appear for the CLAT 2024 examination. However, they shall be required to produce an evidence of their passing the qualifying examination at the time of admission, failing which they shall lose their right to be considered for admission.
  • The result of the qualifying examination (i.e., 10+2) shall be submitted by the candidate at the time of admission, failing which the candidate shall be ineligible for admission to the course they may have applied for.
  • If more than one candidate secures an equal number of marks in the CLAT 2024, the break of tie shall be by the following procedure and order as under: (Higher marks in the component/section on Legal Aptitude in the CLAT 2024 exam, Higher age, Computerised draw of lots.)

For PG Courses-

  • An LLB Degree or an equivalent examination with a minimum of Fifty percent (50%) marks or its equivalent grade in case of candidates belonging to General/OBC/PWD/NRI/PIO/OCI categories and Forty-Five percent (45%) marks or its equivalent grade in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST categories.
  • Candidates appearing for their qualifying examination in April/May 2024 are also eligible to apply.
  • There is no upper age limit for appearing for the CLAT 2024.
  • Tie Breaker Rule- In case of equal marks, the break of tie shall be by the following procedure and order as under- (higher age, Computerised draw of lots)

CLAT 2024 Application Process:

The CLAT 2024 online registration period will begin on July 1st, 2023, and end on November 10th, 2023.

  • Prior to anything else, candidates must register on the CLAT 2024 website- https://consortiumofnlus.ac.in/ using their personal email address and mobile number. An OTP will be given to the registered mobile number after registration to verify it. Candidates can use their registered mobile number and the password they provided during registration to log in once the mobile number has been verified.
  • The screen will switch to a new page. Choose the UG or PG course of your choice.
  • Click the CLAT 2024 Application button.
  • Upload the signature and the photo.
  • Now, candidates are required to fill the basic details such as- personal details/ category/gender/address of communication.
  • Now, fill the educational details like- Enter year of qualifying exam passing or appearing, Enter board, percentage or university name.
  • In next step, choose the centre preference (at least three).
  • Further candidates have to choose the reservation of NLUs as per their domicile.
  • Click on the declaration form.
  • Click on submit form button.
  • Now, make the application fee payment through online mode only- net banking, debit card, credit card or bank challan. (Application fee for General/OBC/PWD/NRI candidates: Rs- 4,000/-) (Application fee for SC/ST/BPL category candidates: Rs- 3,500/-)
  • Select the "Click here to print the confirmation page" link. The screen will display the confirmation page. The confirmation sheet can be printed by the candidates for their records.

Documents that need to be uploaded together with the online application.

  • Front facing recent passport-size photo against a plain background
  • Signature of the candidate.
  • Certificate of category in case you're applying under SC, ST, or OBC
  • Relevant certificate from an authorized body if the applicant is submitting a P.W.D. application.
  • a pertinent certificate from an authorized body if the applicant falls under the BPL category.

CLAT 2024 Syllabus:

English including Comprehension:

  • English Vocabulary: Antonyms, Synonyms and Analogies.
  • English Proficiency: Idioms and Phrases, One Word Substitution, Sentence Improvement, Rearrangement of Sentence in Paragraph, Rearrangement of Words in Sentence, Fill in the blanks and Cloze Tests.
  • English Usage Errors: Common Errors, Spotting Errors, Inappropriate Usage of Words and Spelling Mistakes (English Usage), Use of Correct Word.
  • English Comprehension: Paragraph will be given. Questions will be asked from that paragraph. Understand the para and answer the questions accordingly.

General Knowledge and Current Affairs:

Events of National and International importance also covering current events in area of Economics, Science, Technology, Sports, Persons and Places, Static GK & Latest Happening, Books and Authors.

Mathematics

  • Arithmetic (Number Theory): Number Systems, Surds and Indices, Square Roots, Fractions and Decimals, HCF and LCM, Simplification, Approximations, Ratio and Proportion, Average and Logarithms.
  • Commercial Maths: Interest, Percentage, Profit and Loss, Partnership and Discounts.
  • Mensuration: Areas and Volumes.

Legal Aptitude

  • This section will judge candidate’s interest towards study of law, research aptitude and problem solving ability.
  • These questions will be related to legal propositions and set of facts satisfying the propositions.
  • Such propositions may or may not be true, you have to assume them and answer the questions accordingly.
  • Some major topics are International Law, Criminal Law, Indian Constitution, Legal Terms, Legal Maxims, Family Law, Contracts and Torts.

Logical Reasoning

  • Reasoning Tests: Direction and Distance Test, Analogy Test, Classification (Odd Man Out) Test, Coding Decoding Test, Number Test, Series Test, Relationships Test, Alphabet Test, Ranking Tests and Time Sequence Test.
  • Logic Tests: Statements Assumptions, Statements Arguments, Statements Conclusions and Statements Action.
