Civil Engineering – Career, Courses, Entrance Exam, Colleges.

The development of a country can be seen only in its remarkable infrastructure. Pleasing building designs, adequate sewerage & drain facilities, accessible public transportation, comfortable street amenities and convenient highways improves ease of living. Civil engineers play a prominent role in infrastructure development. They are responsible for designing estimating and construction of the infrastructure. In India, civil engineering profession plays a prominent role to supporting economic development and an important contribution to make towards the improvement of the living standard of the people. As a country is moving forward into becoming a developed nation, the responsibility of civil engineering is to make sure that the construction sector is potential and economical for the advancement of the nation.

Career Prospect

A civil engineer is required to hold a professional license, after his graduation, experience qualifications and passing a few exams.  A career after civil engineering is very fulfilling. Construction sector is the biggest employer of manpower.  More than1/3 of the wealth making of world is the segment of construction. Investment on infrastructure throughout the world surpasses 1 trillion dollars per annum. There is a lot of scope and opportunity in government departments like public health, water system, highways for civil engineering graduates. There are various jobs that include supervision, design, and analyze construction, of private as well as public projects, such as buildings, dams, highways, canals, water sewages and bridges. Perfection and commitment are basic aspects related with this job.

Growth Prospect

Experience plays a key role in affecting a civil engineer’s pay. It is likely that civil engineer jobs will increase much faster than the average of all occupations by 2022. Civil engineers hold about 278,400 jobs in 2010, 50% of which worked for agricultural & engineering firms, 25% worked with the government and the rest worked in construction.  There are some fields in this branch, which will offer great opportunities for students. These include:

Designing

For any construction, major or minor, a blue print has to be designed. It includes, area of the site, planning of the construction, type of material to be used for construction, estimated cost of construction, etc. An experienced civil engineer designs a perfect blueprint for a construction. For finding a designing career in civil engineering, incredible academic record and experience is essential. Learning of civil engineering software, for example, AutoCAD, Staad Pro, AutoTum, and TopoCAD makes you more employable.

Planning

Planning is done by keeping in mind, the future needs and challenges a construction is going to face. A good planning gives a construction quality span of life. If one has excellent planning skills, choosing a career in planning or project management is a good option. Planning engineers find huge demand in construction companies. Knowledge of software such as MS Project and Primavera can be helpful in this field.

Construction

Experienced civil engineers undertake the construction tasks as it is more related to the quality and standard of a construction to the core. Freshers are recruited as site supervisors to learn the basics of civil engineering under experienced engineers. It is viewed as a challenging work and includes execution of mega ventures at various levels.

Pay for Civil engineer

In India, a fresh civil engineer can expect between Rs. 20,000 to Rs.40,000 per month depending on the rank and seniority. The average annual compensation of a civil engineer is Rs.356,262. A Civil Engineer typically gets an average pay on a scale from 25,000 – 75,000 relying upon the level of training. After gaining experience, a civil engineer may receive a promotion to senior engineer and can earn Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 90,000 a month. Engineers with software like Project Management, Visual Basic (VB), Engineering Design, and Microsoft Project are well paid. Someone with 15-20 years’ experience can rake in upwards of Rs. 15-24L PA.

  • 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths is mandatory for admission to a course in Civil Engineering.
  • Entrance Exams (IITJEE, AIEEE, BITSAT etc.) are conducted at both the national and state level.
  • After graduation, for admission into M.Tech, one needs to qualify GATE.
