Regional College of Nursing, the pioneer institute, offering university level nursing education, was established on 3rd October, 1977 under the NEC scheme and direct administrative control of Government of Assam. The College was formally inaugurated on 5th December 1977 by the then Governor of Assam & Meghalaya His Excellency Late L. P. Singh. It was through the tremendous and combined effort of two great personnel Late Dr. J. Mahanta, then Principal cum Chief Superintendent of Gauhati Medical College & Hospital and Mrs. A. Kerketta, the First Principal of Regional College of Nursing that this institution started functioning. Today it has became the pride of North East in the field of Nursing Education. The glorious existence of Regional College of Nursing has contributed to the upliftment of nursing education in the North Eastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura.
The College initially started functioning in the administrative building of Gauhati Medical College on the top of Narakasur Hill and students were provided practical area for their clinical learning in Gauhati Medical College & Hospital, Assam. It is only other day in the month of February 2006 College shifted to its newly constructed building at the adjacent plot to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Guwahati. Initially the institution offered only Four Years B.Sc. Nursing program with intake capacity of 30 out of which 15 for the state of Assam and 15 for other Northern Eastern states. The year 2008 witnessed a bright dawn with the introduction of 2 years M.Sc. Nursing program with 25 seat strength. In the same year, the seat strength for B. Sc Nursing program was enhanced to 60 numbers. Since the 2020-21 academic session, the seats are enhanced further as 75 for B. Sc. Nursing and 30 for M. Sc Nursing program from academic session 2019-20.
The College also had started 2 years Post Basic B Sc Nursing Programme in the year 1991 till year 2007 and produced 215 numbers of Graduates (Post Basic).
Adding to its glory, in the year 1994, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) recognized Regional College of Nursing as its national level study centre for Post Basic BSc Nursing correspondence course. The college is labeled as one of the top rated study centre by IGNOU and every year the college accommodate a group of floating learners from all over the country.Time to time the college is bestowed the responsibility of imparting training among the nursing personnel for achievement of quality care under various central government scheme. one such presently on - going program is the National Nodal Center (NNC) by the Govt. of India in the year 2016 for strengthening pre - service training in Maternity and Child Health care. as a part of it, the college has successfully completed a total of 14 batches which includes participants from all over the North East. the objectives of the NNC are - To conduct the 6 weeks training course for ANM/ GNM faculty to strengthen their teaching skills, knowledge and clinical skills in MNCH and FP. To conduct post training mentorship visits in order to provide support to the trained faculty.To lead the overall PSE strengthening for nuursing midwifery cadre by supporting the implementation of standard based PSE quality improvement process in all State Nodal Centers and nursing schools within its catchment.To act as center of excellence for pSE of nursing midwifery cader by acting as a resource center for research, capacity building, monitoring, evaluation and innovation.
