Thirithuapuram and Mulagumoodu Vicariates are two integral parts of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kottar in Kanyakumari Disitict. The long standing aspirations of the people of this area and their combined efforts have fructified into the establishment of St. Xavier's Catholic College of Nursing. The College aims at preparing graduates who will have the ability to approach health care from a broader and deeper knowledge base and from a greater capacity to apply analytic, synthetic and interpretative skills to their role. The B, Sc. Programme is intended to develop the student as a person who will strive to fulfill his/her role as member of the nursing profession to uphold the dignity of the profession and to establish professional autonomy in nursing education, practice and research To empower Rural Human Resources with professional skills and knowledge power with desirable human values and to create job opportunities especially for the youth in the medical field under the banner of nursing.
In the year 1998, the senate of the R.C. Diocese, Kottar, decided to form a committee to organize and mobilize the human resources of the lay people of the Kottar Diocese, to establish higher educational institutions, like Medical College, Engineering College, Nursing College and Arts and Science College.On 05.05.2001, a Committee was formed to take the necessary steps to get approval from the Government, to start a Nursing College at Chunkankadai. It was to be the combined effort by Thiruthuvapuram and Mulagumoodu vicariates.On 26.10.2003, the first inspection was conducted by Director of Medical Education at the Animation centre, Bishop’s House, Nagercoil for the Government permission.
Realizing the immediate need for the infrastructure of the nursing college, the Ceremony for foundation Stone Laying was held on 12.04.2004, presided over by the Bishop Most. Rev. A. Leon Dharma Raj (Late) at Chunkankadai. The initial fund for the college building was mobilized and supported by the people of Mulagumoodu and Thiruthuapuram vicariates, which was historical indeed Each vicariate pastoral council visited all the respective parishes and fixed a reasonable amount based on the financial strength and population of the parish. All the parish priests and parish councils co-operated very well along with the Vicar Forane.
