16 students score perfect 100 this year in CAT

Out of the 1.7 lakh students who sat for CAT 2014, 16 won a 100 percentile score to emerge as toppers.

While CAT results were delayed by a week to ensure a smooth process, candidates trying to access the site from Saturday evening faced numerous difficulties, including being unable to log on. As a result, compared to other years, data about the CAT toppers has been trickling in rather slowly.

Two of the 100 percentilers are from IIT Kanpur. For both, it was their first attempt. UP's Pranjul Gupta, a final year electrical engineering student, completed his schooling from Lucknow and studied at Kota before making it through to IIT. He has a job offer from Snapdeal in hand, but is now keen to pursue his MBA, preferably from IIM Ahmedabad. Pranjul's father owns a medical store and his mother is a housewife.

Outside studies, Pranjul has been a coordinator of the Rubik's Cube Hobby Group in IIT Kanpur and taught many of his batchmates and juniors to master the techniques. His personal best: solving a Rubik's cube in less than 25 seconds in a competition. "I used to put in about 2-3 hours of study a day but did my mock tests regularly," says Pranjul who signed up for coaching at CL Educate (Career Launcher).

The only girl among the 16 toppers is Neha Manglik, a BITS Pilani chemical engineering student from New Delhi. The daughter of Jayant Manglik, president of Religare Securities, Neha has been an achiever throughout, ranking fifth in the CMAT earlier this year.

Neha put in a lot of preparation for her CAT, including classroom coaching and mock tests from TIME, aside from shortcut workshops from Cetking and mock tests from CL. She also makes time for poetry--besides having headed the poetry club at BITS Pilani, she writes a fair bit on her own. She is clear about two things--wanting a creative angle in whatever job she takes up and being able to balance her work and her family life, instead of just a big pay packet.
