AP to fix 1st yr flop show (Engineering)

HYDERABAD : The state govern ment has finally initiated steps to check the high failure rate of engineering firstyear students here.
More than 80 per cent of the students have been failing in their first year exams for the last three years.

This year the government has decided to begin the counselling in July and conclude it by the first week of August to start classes in the second week of August.

Officials feel that this will save four months in the academic year and give ample time for the faculty to teach and students to learn.

Now, with just five months remaining for the academic year to conclude after the beginning of classes, the professors are rushing through the syllabus without ascertaining if the students have understood what is being taught.

Though the Eamcet is held in May every year, the government could initiate the counselling process for admissions only in August and conclude it by November, which is being done in three phases, thanks to the ‘indiscriminate approvals’ granted by the All India Council for Technical Education to set up new engineering colleges and permit additional sections in the existing engineering fscolleges during counselling.

The committee comprising top officials has decided to include only those engineering colleges on the admissions list which secure all necessary approvals from the AICTE and the state government by May 30.
