Compulsory Telugu plan runs into trouble

The compulsory Telugu rule in state schools is getting murkier with every passing day. While the chief ministers office had instructed officials to follow the Tamil Nadu model with regard to implementation of language policy, lawmakers say it would be difficult to do it without bringing CBSE and ICSE schools under its ambit.
About 1,789 schools across the state will be affected by the move,as many of them do not offer Telugu as a compulsory language. Most central schools offer Telugu as an optional paper till class VI,while a few students opt for their mother tongue. Its no surprising then, only 20% of students appearing from the state opt for Telugu paper in CBSE and ICSE board examinations.Once implemented, students of these schools will have to study Telugu as one of the three languages.Adopting the TN model would also mean that only the regional language (Telugu) and English will be given importance in the curriculum. If the state plans to strictly adhere to TN model, students might have to opt for Telugu as a compulsory first language,English as the second language and any other language of their choice including Sanskrit,Urdu,Arabic or French as the third language. To implement the model, the government will also have to rework the three language system, where Telugu and English could be chosen as either first, second or third language.
