IIM Ahmedabad Unveils Major Overhaul for MBA Admission 2027: CAT Percentiles and 65% Weightage Take Center Stage
NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad has rolled out significant structural revisions to its admission policy for the flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP) in Management—its equivalent to an MBA—for the 2027–29 batch. The updated guidelines introduce crucial changes to how candidates are evaluated, most notably shifting the primary shortlisting mechanism and elevating the importance of the Common Admission Test (CAT).
In a departure from previous years, IIM Ahmedabad has announced that it will now use CAT 2026 percentiles instead of normalised scores to evaluate and shortlist candidates. Academic experts note that percentile-based evaluations offer greater stability across varying exam sessions and difficulty tiers, as they judge a candidate's standing relative to the entire test-taking pool rather than relying on complex normalization scaling formulas.
Under the newly revised formula for shortlisting candidates for the Analytical Writing Test (AWT) and Personal Interview (PI) stage, the CAT 2026 percentile now commands a heavy 65% weightage.
The remaining 35% of the initial composite score is derived from the Application Rating (AR), which factors in:
Academic performance across Class 10 and Class 12
Undergraduate degree marks
Full-time work experience
Gender diversity indicators
The final composite score is further normalized across distinct undergraduate disciplines to maintain equity across diverse academic backgrounds.
IIM Ahmedabad has also simplified its evaluation matrix for past academics. Instead of complex, stream-specific tables for Class 12 and graduation, the institute has standardized academic scoring brackets. Additionally, the older broad "Academic Categories" (ACs) have been dismantled in favor of a granular list of 20 distinct undergraduate disciplines—spanning fields like Computer Science, Commerce, Law, Journalism, Humanities, and Pure Sciences—ensuring more precise comparative benchmarking.
To clear the preliminary screening barrier for the 2027–29 batch, aspirants must meet category-specific baseline percentiles:
General / EWS: 95 overall percentile (with a minimum of 85 in each section: VARC, DILR, QA)
NC-OBC: 90 overall percentile (80 sectional)
SC: 85 overall percentile (75 sectional)
ST: 75 overall percentile (65 sectional)
PwD categories enjoy relaxed overall and sectional cut-offs mapped across respective reservation brackets.
Officials have reiterated that simply meeting these minimum threshold cut-offs does not automatically guarantee an interview call, as final shortlists depend on overall composite ratings.
For candidates who successfully clear the preliminary rounds and make it to the AWT and PI stage, the ultimate admission weightage formula is distributed as follows:
Personal Interview (PI): 50%
Normalised Composite Score (from Stage 1): 40%
Analytical Writing Test (AWT): 10%
The official AWT-PI shortlists based on CAT 2026 results are expected to be released by IIM Ahmedabad in January 2027. Aspirants preparing for CAT 2026 are advised to thoroughly review the updated admission policy document on the official IIM Ahmedabad website to align their preparation strategies with the new framework.
