IIT Council Plans Pan - India B.E. Test from 2013

The council of the Indian Institutes of Technology on Wednesday proposed to hold a pan-India common entrance test for admission to engineering programmes possibly from 2013.

After a meeting of the council, Union human resources development minister Kapil Sibal said the concurrence of the Central Advisory Board of Education and state education ministers would be sought before implementing the proposals.
According to Union HRD minister Kapil Sibal, an all-India merit list will be prepared based on the combined weightage given to class XII exam and to a common test.

The test will examine a students logic and nonsubject matters.
He said the council was seized of the problems that states like AP faced while implementing equalisation. Weightage would be given to Class 12 marks after the results are equalised for which the Indian Statistical Institute will put in place a formula.
On tuition fee, he said it would remain the same at `50,000 per annum but students , excluding STs / OBCs, would `pay back' the amount which is the difference between the fee and what the IIT spends on him.
