JEE Main 2025: What should I keep in mind for the 75% criteria?

Preparing for JEE is a big challenge due to the fact that board exam schedules and entrance tests would seem to clash with the ideal preparation time. The issue of 75 per cent marks comes in board exams, plus having to rank in the top 20 percentile in most cases. These requirements are essential for admission to IITs, NITs, and other premier engineering colleges.

Prepare a schedule that keeps time for board subjects as well as JEE preparation. For instance, you might keep the morning hours dedicated to board exam subjects, and the evening hours to JEE practice. Take some break hours to avoid burnout.

Understand the eligibility criteria

The 75 per cent criteria means that candidates need to have 75 per cent marks in class 12 board exam. However, they can also appear to be in the top 20 percentile of their boards for students targeting NITs and IITs; whereas in case of SC/ST students, the threshold mark is relaxed to 65 per cent.

Focus on presentation for boards

Board exams test your ability to present concepts in an ordered and elaborate manner. Practice writing long answers, diagrams, and numerical problems neatly. Use bullet points, headings, and underline to make your answers visually appealing.

Focus on the NCERT books

NCERT textbooks will act as the base for board exams and are helpful for JEE preparation too. Study all topics strongly and practice questions at the end of every chapter. Concentrate specifically on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Importance to few topics

Give importance to high weightage topics for your boards and concentrate on scoring topics like:

Physics – Current Electricity, Optics, and Thermodynamics

Chemistry-Coordination Compounds, Organic Reactions, Periodic Trends.

Mathematics-Calc, Probability, and Coordinate Geometry

Make use of the crossover advantage

JEE Main and board exams cover many of the same subjects. For example, preparing JEE math questions helps you perform faster on board exams. The theory you study for boards also aids in answering JEE’s conceptual questions.

You can satisfy the 75 per cent requirement and perform well on JEE Main by strategically concentrating on both board examinations and JEE preparation. Recall that the secret to success is consistency, time management, and discipline!
